Applied Philosophy for the Value-Based Design of Social Network Apps (AppPhil)

AppPhil's vision is to introduce value-based engineering to build responsible technologies that respect and adhere to the evolving values and standards of a community. The goal is to put humans in control of their technologies and rules that should govern the behavior of their technologies. Understanding the relevant values and formalizing the relationship between values and norms becomes crucial, and so is finding a formal language for the norms that allows humans to understand and discuss the norms, all of which forms the AppPhil roadmap.

Contribution to the DH:

We use the uHelp application prototype (https://www.uhelpapp.com) as a motivating example and use case for our research, and we make a philosophical analysis of the values of the standards that the application promotes. Throughout this process, the communities that use this support application will be involved. uHelp is a mobile application for asking for help and providing help. The application creates a community of mutual help with your friends, your friends' friends and so on, building a great social network that addresses people's need for help.
